The AAUW International Fellowships 2027–28 provide financial support to international women pursuing full-time graduate study in eligible STEM disciplines. The program is offered by the American Association of University Women (AAUW) and is primarily intended for women who are not U.S. citizens or permanent residents and plan to study at an accredited U.S. institution.

For the 2027–28 academic year, eligible applicants may apply for a STEM master’s or doctoral degree. The fellowship provides a stipend of $20,000 for master’s students and $25,000 for doctoral students. Applications are open from August 17, 2026, until September 17, 2026, at 5:00 PM Eastern Time.

About the AAUW International Fellowships

The American Association of University Women (AAUW) has supported international women pursuing postgraduate education for more than a century. The International Fellowships program is designed to help academically strong women develop advanced expertise and use their education and professional skills to contribute to their communities and home countries.

For the 2027–28 cycle, the fellowship is focused on eligible STEM degree programs. Applicants may pursue a first master’s degree or an academic or professional doctorate, provided the program meets AAUW’s STEM classification requirements.

Eligibility Criteria

  • ✅ Applicants must identify as women.
  • ✅ Applicants must be non-U.S. citizens and must not hold U.S. permanent resident status or be applying for U.S. permanent residency.
  • ✅ Applicants must be admitted to or enrolled in their first master’s or academic/professional doctoral degree in an eligible STEM discipline.
  • ✅ Applicants must have a degree equivalent to at least a U.S. bachelor’s degree.
  • ✅ Applicants must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale for their highest earned degree.
  • ✅ The proposed study must be full-time at an institution accredited by the U.S. Department of Education.
  • ✅ Applicants must begin their program on or before September 15, 2027, and complete it on or after April 30, 2028.

Eligible Fields of Study

The fellowship is available for STEM programs classified in areas such as:

  • Computer Science, Data Science, Artificial Intelligence and Information Technology
  • Engineering and related technical disciplines
  • Biology, Biotechnology, Biochemistry and other life sciences
  • Chemistry, Physics and Materials Science
  • Environmental, Earth and Space Sciences
  • Mathematics, Statistics and quantitative disciplines
  • Eligible STEM-based health and medical sciences

AAUW determines eligibility according to the classification of the degree program rather than only the applicant’s specific research topic.

Fellowship Benefits

  • 🏆 $20,000 stipend for eligible master’s degree applicants.
  • 🏆 $25,000 stipend for eligible doctoral degree applicants.
  • 🏆 Fellowship funds may be used for eligible educational costs, required study materials, living expenses, housing, food and dependent care.
  • 🏆 The stipend is paid to fellows in two equal payments during the fellowship term.
