Operations Automation Specialist – Sunbury-on-Thames
bp is recruiting an Operations Automation Specialist to join its Technology team in Sunbury-on-Thames. The role focuses on developing, implementing and testing technology solutions involving industrial IoT, sensors, telemetry and robotics.
This is a permanent, full-time hybrid position for an experienced technology professional who can work across automation, systems integration, field testing and end-to-end data solutions.

About Job
The Operations Automation Specialist will work within bp’s Technology and IT&S function to help develop and deploy technology solutions for operational environments. The position covers industrial IoT, sensors, telemetry, robotics and related digital technologies.
The successful candidate will translate business requirements into technology solutions, support field deployments, test systems and help integrate hardware and software with existing site infrastructure. The role also includes data validation from field devices through to cloud systems.
Key Responsibilities
- ✅ Translate business needs into clear technology requirements and solutions.
- ✅ Develop, implement and test IIoT, sensor, telemetry and robotics solutions.
- ✅ Design and document quality assurance testing processes and test cycles.
- ✅ Support field testing, proof-of-concept deployments and technology installations.
- ✅ Validate data from field devices through to cloud platforms and support system integration.
- ✅ Work with technology vendors and operational teams to identify issues and improvement opportunities.
Eligibility Criteria
- ✅ Experience working with automation technologies in industrial or operational environments.
- ✅ Knowledge of robotics and exposure to robot programming.
- ✅ Experience with Linux, Robot Operating System (ROS) or other relevant embedded operating systems.
- ✅ Understanding of networking technologies such as Ethernet, Wi-Fi and cellular connectivity.
- ✅ Experience with systems integration, field testing, Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) or Site Acceptance Testing (SAT).
- ✅ Strong analytical, problem-solving, communication and organisational skills.
